Erasure
Being dissatisfied with the results of the efforts he put forth in
Depeche Mode, Yaz, and The Assembly, Vince
Clarke moved on to find the right kind of voice for a new band. After placing an
ad in a British music newspaper, he received many replies from interested singers.
When he heard the demo tape of Andy Bell, he knew this was what he had been searching
for. Andy, a flashy dresser and eccentric character, sings in quite a high vocal range,
many times using his smooth falsetto voice.
So in 1985, Erasure was born. Their releases did not catch much attention from
pop music audiences until a few years after the duo's inception. Beginning in the
latter half of the 1980's however, Erasure climbed to the top of the pop music
charts, and amassed a handful of top 10 hits -- both in the U.S. and U.K.
The group began as one performing synth-pop and it has remained that way, even
throughout the 1990's when synth-pop essentially died. A collection of synthesizers,
sequencers, and drum machines help Erasure produce their rhythmic, poppy songs.
No band needed. Some assembly required.
