Elves

[Legolas the elf]
Legolas, an elf originally of Mirkwood.
Elves are the fairest and wisest race of Middle Earth. They were created by Eru (the One) during the time when Varda (the Lady of the Heavens) rekindled the stars above Middle Earth. The light of the stars brought life to the elves, and they were awakened. It is because of this that elves love starlight most and worship Varda.
The bodies of elves do not change or wither with old age; the elves only become more wiser. Old male half-elves may have long beards, yet their skin is still as fair as the day they were created, and they have grown in knowledge. Elves can be physically killed or harmed, however. When the body of an elf is killed, the equivalent of the elf's soul is transferred to a realm where it awaits a chance to transfer into another body. In this way, elves technically go through a process of reincarnation. When an elf is reincarnated, his new body looks much like the older body, and he retains all of his previous knowledge and wisdom.

What do elves look like?

Elves have skin which is of a bright, light colour, and there is always light on an Elven face. The hair of elves has been described as being a fine golden-blonde in colour. However, there have also been many instances of some elves having hair of silver. Most male elves grow hardly any facial hair, while half-elves are capable of growing long beards.

Elves have a small-to-medium build and are as tall as or taller than humans. Many people mistake elves for dwarves, thinking that they are only a few feet tall. Another common misrepresentation of elves is that they have large, pointy ears. Certainly elves did/do have somewhat pointy ears and better hearing than humans, but most art work poorly shows what elves are supposed to look like.

Other Elf Information

Aside from Dwarves, the art of spoken language was taught to most beings of Middle Earth by Elves. Elves speak in the most beautiful, eloquent language of all. They spent a long time studying trees, and taught some trees how to communicate verbally.
