Perl (Practical Extraction and Report Language) was developed in the
mid 1980's by Larry Wall. It was originally designed by him solely for
dealing with logs, databases, and other text documents. However, Perl has
been improved and expanded greatly throughout its development.
I have been learning and dealing with this language since about February of 1998, although it was not until the beginning of 1999 that I became actively involved with it. I've found Perl to be pretty flexible, and programming can become quite interesting and fun because of this. It also has a comprehensive set of built-in text manipulation tools, similar to Unix's sed, awk, and grep. Some of my original Perl scripts will be available....some time. Right now I still feel that my programming skills leave a lot to be desired! Oh, also, yes I realize that there are two full Perl books available here. I own the original disc on which they were distributed and am exercising my right of 'free use' as established by US copyright law. So nanny nanny boo boo! :-) |
